abstract={Software organizations increasingly face the challenge to develop a large number of product variants for their customers. While many organizations still focus on a single product at a time, successful software organizations address the whole range of products in an integrated manner. If the existing reuse potential is adequately exploited, enormous cost savings and quality improvements can result. So far, the incremental introduction of a product line approach and the exploitation of the reuse potential mostly depended on the experience of the responsible personnel due to a lack of systematicapproaches. In this Ph.D. thesis we describe a disciplined approach for systematically planning the development of a software product line. This approach supports (1) identifying an incremental transitioning plan to product line development that determines the sequence and the scope of the introduction based on benefit-and-risk tradeoffs, and (2) determining the specific software components that should be developed for reuse, based on the specific development goals of the organization. The explicit link to the company goals guarantees that the resulting product line approach is optimally aligned to the strategy of the company.}
