abstract={Software Product Line (SPL) concepts enable very systematic and efficient derivation of products. They have been applied to many domains including interactive applications (e.g., online shops). However, the user interface (UI) part of applications has barely been considered yet. While standard SPL concepts allow derivation of functionally correct UIs, there are additional non-functional requirements like usability which have to be considered in practice. In this paper we provide a case study to investigate UI variability in practice by hand of a commercial web-based information system HIS-GX/QIS. We analyze 1) which aspects of a UI vary - like navigation, layout, or types of UI elements - and 2) to which degree. With this we aim to provide a foundation towards the long-term goal of systematic derivation of usable UIs within SPLs.}
